This year’s Glasgow University Union Schools Debating Championships will take place on Wednesday 4th November 2009.
Glasgow University Union offers one of the leading competitions for secondary school age pupils in the UK. The standard of speakers is generally very high, which makes for an excellent competition. The Competition is in British Parliamentary style, with four rounds of five minute speeches - breaking to a final which will be held in the Union’s world famous Debating Chamber. Speaking in the Chamber is a fantastic experience for your pupils, following in the footsteps of distinguished past Glasgow debaters including John Smith, Donald Dewar, Sir Menzies Campbell and Charles Kennedy.
There is a prize and a trophy for the winning team!
The cost per team will be £15. Teams will be provided with both lunch and dinner on the day itself, while information regarding transport and accommodation can be provided upon request.
The competition will be held at the Glasgow University Union on the campus of Glasgow University, which is easily accessible by public transport from the city centre. The day will run from 10.30am until 7pm.
There are no prepared motions - teams will have 15 minutes to prepare for each round.
All motions will be closed.
We are unable to accept hybrid teams.
There is no age restriction other than students should be at secondary/high school.
Students should have experience of debating in BP style.
